e-Prescribing News

New York I-STOP E-Prescribing Mandate Delay: In mid-February a bill passed the NY state Senate and the Assembly to postpone the deadline for mandatory electronic prescribing until next year.

Much to the relief of many NY prescribers the legislation will delay implementation until March 2016. The legislation still awaits the signature of NY Governor Andrew Cuomo. The bill which was sponsored by John McDonald a practicing pharmacist is expected to be signed.

Change to Missouri EPCS Processing Status: According to DrFirst, the Missouri Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs has retracted its guidance that EPCS was legal in the state and therefore, Surescripts has changed the status of the state of Missouri to temporarily suspend EPCS processing.

A rule change to allow EPCS is currently being pursued.Once the rule is finalized and adopted, EPCS processing will resume in Missouri.Until then, providers are being advised to write paper prescriptions for controlled substances.

Patient Statements in Office Therapy

Here's how: An electronic file is generated in Office Therapy. Then it's sent directly to Gateway for processing. They handle all the rest – printing, sorting, folding, and mailing - significantly reducing costs and saving you time.

Gateway will customize your statements to reflect your preferences and authenticate and update addresses. If patients call with questions, a PDF image of each statement is available online.

Skype and HIPAA

Is Skype compatible with HIPAA standards?

The use of Skype raises many HIPAA issues. Security rule compliance requires that covered entities use technologies that keep protected health information secure and confidential. These include:

• Audit controls, which are mechanisms for monitoring who is accessing PHI.
• Breach notification tools

Skype does not appear to offer any audit control or breach notification tools to alert you if there has been an unauthorized disclosure of PHI. Additionally, Skype does not offer business associate agreements which are critical to HIPAA compliance.

Some organizations recommend not using Skype and similar Web-based platforms because of concerns related to HIPAA. Do your research. The bottom line is if you opt to use Skype to communicate with patients, be aware of the risk that HIPAA rules may be violated.
