Professional Wills

Man with laptopMany healthcare professionals run their practices as if they will always be around to care for their clients or patients, but what happens when there is a sudden death or incapacitation?

A professional will provides guidance to family members, colleagues, and associates to ensure timely and continuing care of clients, as well as determining what to do with the clinical records. When making a professional will, state laws and association guidelines, as well as codes of ethics should be considered.

In his article Planning Ahead — Drafting a Professional Will in Eye on Ethics, Social Work Today, Frederic G. Reamer, PhD writes that, “When social workers begin working with clients, they should consider obtaining clients’ consent to share their contact information and, if necessary, clinical records with the social worker’s designee in the event of an emergency."

There are a number of resources available on the web. The American Psychological Association provides information and a sample will.

Important DrFirst® EPCS Token Advice

drfirstIf you are enrolled in Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) through DrFirst and need to register a new EPCS token, you are required to provide an OTP Pin number from an existing token in order to do so. If you have only one token that becomes lost or broken, and you can’t provide the pin number, you will need to repeat the EPCS Identity Proofing enrollment process.

checkmarkWe recommend that you register two (2) EPCS tokens - a hard token and a soft token. The hard token is given to you when you initially sign up. The soft token is an application for Android, iPhone, or Tablet devices that can be downloaded at the App Store on your device. It is available from Symantec, and is called VIP Access. A desktop version of the software is also available and can be downloaded here.

Once downloaded, go into your EPCS Gold Prescriber Dashboard in DrFirst to register the token. You can have up to five (5) tokens registered on your account.
