Domestic Violence Awareness Month

awarenessAccording to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, "On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of (some form of) physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.”

During the month of October, we celebrate those who have survived domestic violence, mourn those who’ve died because of the violence, and honor and support those who work to end domestic violence. For resources and to learn more visit http://ncadv.org/.

ICD-10 Grace Period Ended

icd10The one-year grace period for filing insurance claims using ICD-10 coding ended on October 1st. That means that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) require that all claims be coded accurately with the specific, correct ICD-10 codes.

If you are not already filing claims with the highest level of specificity, you may find that your claims are being rejected. Each claim needs to be coded to the level of certainty known for the session encounter.

Preventing Viruses

computer safetyViruses can make us miserable and be costly. Biological viruses make us sick. Computer viruses, like Ransomware, steal our data and destroy our computers. Simple steps such as getting a flu shot, washing your hands frequently, and keeping surfaces clean help prevent the spread of the flu. Similarly, you can help protect your computer and data by routinely remembering to follow some simple steps:

  • Make sure your computer is being backed-up regularly off-site.
  • Only open emails from trusted sources.
  • Do not click on links inside of emails.
  • Check all links before clicking by rolling over them to verify it is going to the proper web site. For example, when rolling over View it in your browser at the top of our e-Newsletter, you should see the web address http://www.docutracinc.com/web/ENewsletteroctober2016.html.
  • Keep your anti-virus software up to date at work and at home.

Please note, all links in our newsletters are confirmed and tested prior to being published.

E-Prescribing Mandate

pill bottleElectronic prescribing of controlled substances reduces fraud and keeps patients from getting multiple prescriptions for the same drug, but only three states require it and one doesn't even enforce its law, according to an article by Jayne O’Donnell who covers healthcare policy for USA Today.

The three states are New York, Maine, and Minnesota. New York prescribers who continue to use paper scripts are subject to fines, jail time, or both. In Maine, physicians who do not prescribe electronically by January 2017 will also be subject to fines, jail time, or both. Minnesota, however, was the first state to require electronic prescribing, but the legislation doesn't allow enforcement or penalties for prescribers that don't comply. In the light of a national epidemic of opioid and heroine abuse, we can surmise that it only seems reasonable that all states will, at some point, mandate e-prescribing.

Disaster Recovery and Redundant Data Protection

With the DocuTrac Cloud, there are two layers of Data Protection. These include both local and offsite data storage, with the ability to restore a single file or the complete system. As a result, “Disaster Recovery” becomes a standard component of the DocuTrac Cloud. This eliminates any extra cost to your practice and adds reliability and peace of mind, ensuring maximum uptime.

Disaster RecoveryHowever, there is more to Disaster Recovery (DR) than quick access to a backup of your data. DR involves a set of policies and procedures to enable the recovery or continuation of vital technology infrastructure, systems, physical locations, and most importantly your business processes following a natural or human-induced disaster.

A disaster recovery plan (DRP) documents policies, procedures and actions that can limit the disruption to an organization in the wake of a disaster. Just as a disaster can makes the continuation of normal functions impossible, a disaster recovery plan consists of actions intended to minimize the negative effects and allow the organization to maintain or quickly resume mission-critical functions.
